Four years that open every door
Four years, and almost everything a university will ever see about you is written in them. High school is where grades become a permanent record, where the classes you choose either build a case or quietly cap it, and where a handful of rules nobody spells out can decide the whole outcome. This is the map — the real one.

What this stage looks likeЩо являє собою цей етап
High school runs from grade 9 to grade 12, and every one of those years lands on the transcript a university reads. It is a system of credits, a running GPA, and a menu of courses you select a full year in advance — and understanding how those pieces fit together is the difference between drifting through it and steering it.High school
There is a version of high school where you simply show up, take whatever classes appear on your schedule, get grades, and arrive at the final year to discover that the shape of your application was decided long ago by choices you did not know you were making. And there is a version where you understand the machine — how the credits add up, how the GPA is really calculated, when the important choices actually happen — and you steer. The difference between those two students is rarely talent. It is information. This article is the information.
The four-year arc, and why every year is already counting
American high school is four years, and each has a name you will hear constantly: 9th grade is freshman year, 10th is sophomore, 11th is junior, 12th is senior. It is tempting to treat the early years as a warm-up. Do not. The single most common regret we hear is some version of "I didn't realise freshman year already counted" — and it does. Every grade from the first semester of 9th grade onward lands on the transcript that universities read. There is no practice round.
Each year does have its own character, though, and knowing the rhythm helps. Freshman year lays the foundation and sets your first, sticky habits. Sophomore year is where you deepen, add rigour, and usually meet the PSAT for the first time. Junior year is the one that matters most and asks the most — the hardest classes, the real SAT or ACT, the year admissions officers scrutinise most closely, all at once. Senior year is when you apply — and, as we will see, the year you must not coast through, however badly you want to.
Credits, and the quiet arithmetic of graduatingCredits
High school runs on credits, sometimes called Carnegie units — one credit is, roughly, a year-long course. To graduate you need a set number, usually somewhere around 20 to 24 depending on your state and district, spread across required subjects: several years of English, of math, of science, of social studies, plus physical education, arts, and a band of electives you choose. That is the floor: the minimum to walk across the stage with a diploma.
Here is the distinction that trips up so many students. Graduating and being a strong university applicant are two different bars, and the gap between them is enormous. The state's requirement might be two or three years of math and science; a selective university wants to see four years of each, in the most demanding versions available. Meeting the minimum feels like success — you are, after all, on track to graduate. But an application built only to the graduation standard looks thin next to one built to the university standard. Aim past the floor from the start.
The GPA, weighted and unweighted — and why yours has two numbersGPA, weighted
Your grades condense into a GPA, a grade point average, and this is where a genuinely confusing but important detail lives: you almost certainly have two GPAs. The unweighted GPA sits on a 4.0 scale — an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on — and treats every class the same, whether it was the easiest elective or the hardest AP. The weighted GPA rewards difficulty: at most schools a demanding course adds bonus points, with AP and IB Higher-Level courses typically adding a full point (an A becomes 5.0) and Honors courses adding half a point (an A becomes 4.5). That is why you will hear students talk about a GPA "above 4.0" — it is not a mistake, it is the weighting.
Two consequences follow, and both matter. First, an A in an easy class and an A in a punishing one look identical on an unweighted scale but not on a weighted one — which is the system's way of quietly rewarding students who challenge themselves. Second, colleges receive both of your GPAs, but they do not simply trust either one. Every high school sends a school profile alongside your transcript, describing what courses your school offers and how it grades, and admissions offices routinely recalculate your GPA their own way to compare applicants fairly. You cannot game this. What you can do is understand that difficulty is visible and rewarded — so the strategy of padding an unweighted 4.0 with easy classes is far weaker than it looks. (When you are ready to see where you stand, our GPA calculator and our Ukrainian-grade-to-US-GPA converter will estimate both numbers for you — as estimates, always to be checked against each school.)
Some schools also publish a class rank — your position against your graduating class, usually computed on the weighted GPA. Where it exists it can matter, especially at public universities; where it does not, colleges lean on the school profile instead.
The rule nobody tells you: rigour, and choosing it a year early
If middle school's hidden lever was math placement, high school's is rigour — and it comes with a trap in the timing. Universities do not just ask what grades did you earn; they ask how hard were the classes you earned them in. "Strength of curriculum" ranks, year after year, among the very top factors in admissions decisions — often above test scores. The demanding courses have names you need to know: AP (Advanced Placement — college-level courses with a standardised exam scored 1 to 5), IB (International Baccalaureate), Honors, and dual enrolment (also called Running Start in some states), where you take an actual college course for credit while still in high school. High scores on AP and IB exams can even earn university credit later, shortening and cheapening your degree — a point we return to in the University article.
Now the trap, the thing we most want you to walk away with. You choose next year's classes the spring before you take them. Course registration happens months ahead, usually with a counselor, and the rigorous courses have prerequisites and limited seats. This means the student who decides in junior year to "start taking harder classes" has, in many cases, already missed the chain of prerequisites that a rigorous senior schedule required. The advantage does not go to the student who works hardest in the moment; it goes to the student who planned the ladder early — who knew, in 9th and 10th grade, which courses lead to which, and lined them up. So sit down with your counselor early, ask what your school's most rigorous path actually looks like, and choose deliberately, every spring, with the following year in mind.
And a word of fairness, because the picture is not identical for everyone. Colleges judge rigour in the context of your own school. They know most schools in the world — and plenty in the U.S. — do not offer a wall of AP courses, and they do not punish a student for an absence that was never their choice. A student on the standard Ukrainian curriculum is measured against what their school offered, not against an American catalogue. The rule underneath is the same everywhere: take the hardest path realistically available to you, and choose it early enough that the path is still open.
Tests, and the one that pays you backТести, і той, що повертає вам вкладене
Alongside your classes runs a second track: standardised tests. The PSAT/NMSQT arrives first, usually in sophomore and junior year, and most students meet it as practice for the SAT. But there is a detail worth real attention: only the junior-year PSAT qualifies for National Merit, a scholarship-recognition program — a sophomore's score, however high, is practice only. Then come the SAT and ACT, the main admissions tests, most seriously taken in junior year with room to retake. Many colleges are test-optional, but a growing number of selective schools now require a score, especially for international applicants, so the safe assumption is that you may well need one — and a strong score is one of the few things that can lift an unfamiliar school profile. (Our NMT-to-SAT/ACT estimator can give students in the Ukrainian system a rough sense of where they might land — an estimate, not a promise.) Layered on top are the AP and IB exams in the spring, which convert your hardest classes into scores, and potentially into college credit.
The life around the classes
Grades and rigour build the spine of an application, but universities are choosing people, and the rest of high school is where the person shows. Extracurriculars — clubs, sports, music, theatre, a job, caring for family, a project you started yourself — matter most when they show depth and commitment over years rather than a long, shallow list. One thing you pursued seriously, and grew in, and maybe came to lead, says more than ten you touched once. This, too, rewards starting early: leadership and genuine achievement take years to accumulate, and they cannot be manufactured in senior autumn.
The person who helps you hold all of this together is the school counselor. In an ideal world your counselor knows you well, helps you plan your courses, and writes part of your application. In the real world counselors are often stretched across hundreds of students, which means the student who takes the initiative — who introduces themselves early, comes with questions, and keeps the relationship warm — gets far more out of them. Treat your counselor as a partner you have to reach for, not a service that will find you.
Senior year: the finish line you can still trip overSenior
There is a myth that once applications are in, senior year is over. It is not, and believing it has cost real students real offers. Admission is almost always conditional on you finishing the way you started — colleges see your final grades, and a serious collapse in senior year ("senioritis") can lead a university to ask for an explanation or, in the worst cases, to rescind the offer entirely. This is rare, and a single B is not going to undo you. But dropping your hardest classes or letting your grades fall off a cliff after you have been admitted is a genuine risk, not a technicality. Finish the race.
If you are in Ukraine, arriving, or between systems
This article maps the American high school from the inside, because the family standing inside it needs every mechanic named. If you are in the Ukrainian system, you are not running this exact track — but the principles port cleanly: take the most demanding subjects your school offers, keep your grades strong across all four senior-equivalent years, build real depth in a few activities, and start your English and your testing early. Your record will be read in your context, and there are recognised ways to translate it (see our admissions and first-semester guides, and our Education Record Helper if your schooling was interrupted). If you are arriving into an American high school partway through, the timing traps above are sharper for you, not softer: newcomers are the ones most likely to be placed on the default track by default. Find the counselor in your first week, explain where you have come from, and ask — early and specifically — about rigour, math placement, and which doors are still open.
