About USUFUПро USUFU
USUFU is an initiative that helps Ukrainian students and parents get to grips with the American education system — regardless of where they are in their academic journey. Our goal is to spread awareness, build understanding, and help along the way.USUFU — це ініціатива, що допомагає українським студентам і батькам опанувати американську систему освіти — незалежно від того, на якому етапі свого навчального шляху ви перебуваєте.
USUFU is a completely free resource that anyone can use, anywhere, at any time. We are a newly established organization focused on giving Ukrainian families structured support as they work to understand the complex U.S. education system. We are not a paid agency, and we have nothing to sell.USUFU — це цілком безкоштовний ресурс, яким може скористатися будь-хто, будь-де й будь-коли.

Studying in the U.S.
Yes — it is entirely possible for Ukrainian students to study at a U.S. university, whether you are in Ukraine, displaced, or already abroad. Some benefits at specific colleges may or may not be open to you, and the path has real steps (see our admissions and visa guides), but there is genuinely a way to pursue higher education in the United States.
The biggest differences: American admission is holistic — universities weigh your grades over several years, your essays, teacher letters, and activities together, rather than deciding on one national exam. Your result is a GPA built continuously from coursework, not a single final exam. You usually don't choose your specialization before you start, because U.S. degrees are designed to let you explore for a year or two. And the sticker price is rarely the real price, since financial aid can lower it dramatically. Our guides walk through each of these.
No. U.S. degrees are designed to let you explore, and applying as "undecided" is a normal, fully accepted choice — many students change direction in their first year or two. It helps to have interests and a general direction, but you are not locked in.
It is never too late to start — and, we would add, never too early. We are developing our resource with everyone's situation in mind, and we strongly believe that anyone, at any point in their journey, can discover far more than they already know. If you are young, that long runway is an advantage; if you are in your final year, move quickly on tests, your school list, essays, and deadlines.
Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Honors are all more rigorous versions of regular classes. High AP and IB exam scores can earn college credit that may lower the overall cost and length of your degree, and all three strengthen a college application by showing you took a demanding path. Honors classes show rigor but usually do not grant college credit. Importantly, colleges judge you on the hardest path available at your own school — so students in Ukraine are not penalized for not having AP, but if your school offers these classes, taking them (and starting early) matters. See our admissions guide to decide what fits you.
Applying
The Common App is a widely used platform where high-school students apply for their first year of college, and current college students can apply to transfer — all through one form sent to many schools. Some universities use the Coalition Application or their own portal instead, so check what each school requires. Your application brings together your transcript, any test scores, essays, recommendation letters, and an activities list. Our admissions guide has the full step-by-step.
Deadlines cluster in the autumn and winter of your final school year. Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA) are usually around November 1: EA is non-binding, while ED is a binding commitment — if admitted you must attend, and you can apply ED to only one school. Regular Decision (RD) is usually around January 1–15, and some schools use rolling admission that stays open into spring. These dates shift each year and by school, so always verify the exact deadline on each school's own page.
Many U.S. colleges are test-optional, so you are not always required to submit an SAT or ACT score — but a strong score gives universities a more detailed picture of you and can strongly strengthen your application, and a growing number of selective schools now require it, especially for international applicants. English tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, and the Duolingo English Test are more commonly taken by international students to show they are ready for college-level English, and are usually required. Because these policies change every year, check each school's current requirements.
Your Ukrainian Атестат про повну загальну середню освіту is recognized as the equivalent of a U.S. high-school diploma. Some universities accept your documents directly, while others ask for a course-by-course credential evaluation (from a service such as WES) that restates your subjects and grades in U.S. terms. To see roughly how your grades map onto the U.S. 4.0 scale, try our Ukrainian-grade-to-US-GPA converter — its result is an estimate, so always verify with each school.
If your documents are lost or your schooling was interrupted by the war, you are not shut out. Evaluation services such as WES work with ENIC Ukraine and offer a Gateway Program for applicants with partial documentation, and admissions offices have real flexibility here — but tell them early and in writing. Our Education Record Helper tool is built to help you reconstruct a clear record from an interrupted or incomplete schooling history.
Paying for itОплата навчання
The sticker price is large — in 2025–26, roughly $25,000 a year in tuition at a public university and about $45,000 at a private one, with all-in costs of roughly $32,000–$60,000+. But these figures are estimates and represent the maximum, not what most aided international students actually pay. What matters is your net price: the cost minus the aid a school gives you. Try our true-cost tool to estimate a realistic figure, and always verify against each school.
International students generally cannot receive U.S. federal aid (the FAFSA), so the money comes from the universities themselves. You apply through forms such as the CSS Profile or ISFAA, separately at each school, usually by the application deadline. Aid can be need-based (given because your family cannot pay the full cost) or merit-based (given for your record). Our International Financial-Aid Finder lets you filter schools by their aid policies for international students.
These terms decide affordability. Need-blind means that asking for aid does not affect your chance of admission; need-aware means it can. "Meets full need" is the key promise — a school that meets full need covers the entire gap between what your family can pay and the cost, so admission actually means you can attend. Be aware that most schools treat international students as need-aware. Our aid finder and college-list tools flag these policies school by school.
Yes. Target schools that are especially generous — ideally need-blind schools that meet full need for international students; apply for aid carefully and never miss an aid deadline; and consider the community-college "2+2" route, which can cut the total cost of a degree by roughly 30–50%. Application fee waivers can also keep costs down. Our aid finder and true-cost tools help you find schools you could realistically afford.
You almost always need an F-1 student visa (a J-1 applies to some exchange programs). In order: the university issues your I-20 → you pay the I-901 SEVIS fee (about $350) → complete the DS-160 and pay the visa (MRV) fee (about $185) → book and attend your visa interview → if approved, you may enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before your program start date. The fees are estimates that change, so verify current amounts. Our visas guide covers the whole process.
Because routine U.S. visa services in Kyiv have been suspended since 2022, Ukrainian students generally attend the F-1 interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate in another country — commonly Warsaw or Kraków (Poland), Prague, Bucharest, or Frankfurt. Book the earliest appointment you can once you have your I-20, and check the specific post's current rules, since availability and procedures change.
Yes, a visa can be refused. The most common reason, §214(b), means the officer was not convinced you intend to return home after studying rather than to immigrate. Answer honestly and clearly, be ready to explain your specific study plan and how it is funded, and bring your documents. A refusal is not always permanent — circumstances and evidence can change — but it is the risk to prepare for. This is general information, not legal advice.
Yes — working in the U.S. while pursuing your education is entirely possible, but it must always be within the law and carefully considered. On an F-1 visa you may work on campus up to 20 hours a week during the semester without extra permission; working off campus requires prior authorization (CPT or OPT). Unauthorized work can end your student status, so check with your school's international office (your DSO) before accepting any job. See our first-semester guide.
Your first week is legal, not just social: report your arrival to your school's international office and complete the mandatory international orientation, which activates your F-1 status. You will also sort out health insurance (usually required), open a bank account (no SSN needed — just your passport, I-20, and I-94), and start classes. Our first-semester guide walks through it step by step.
As a parent, the most useful things you can do are understand the overall journey, help with organization and financial paperwork, and be the steady voice from home. One rule surprises many families: under a U.S. privacy law (FERPA), once your child is a university student the school generally will not share their grades or records with you without the student's written permission. That is normal, and it means the healthiest arrangement is one your child chooses. See our parent's handbook.

In everyday American English the two words are used almost interchangeably — students say they're "going to college" even when they attend a university. The technical difference: a university is usually larger, offers both undergraduate and graduate (master's, doctoral) degrees, and does research; a college is often smaller and focused on undergraduate teaching (a "liberal arts college" is a well-regarded example). Confusingly, "college" is also the name for a division inside a university (the "College of Engineering"). For your purposes, both a college and a university grant the four-year bachelor's degree, and one is not automatically better than the other. The genuinely different thing is a community college — a two-year school that grants associate degrees and is often used as a more affordable stepping-stone before transferring to a four-year school (see Guide 02). So don't let the words confuse you: focus on the specific school, not its label.
There's no official right number, so treat any figure as a rough guide rather than a rule. A commonly suggested balanced range is around 8 to 12, deliberately spread across your Reach, Target and Safety schools (see Guide 01), so that you end up with real choices rather than a single yes-or-no. Two honest cautions. First, always include at least one true Safety you can both get into and afford — for an international student who needs aid, "affordable" is part of what makes a school a safety at all. Second, applying to too many can quietly lower the quality of your essays, which matter more than the length of your list; a strong application to a well-chosen school beats a rushed one to a random extra. Application fees add up, so use the fee waivers described in Guide 01 rather than trimming your list for money reasons.
A U.S. bachelor's degree normally takes four years of full-time study — some students finish in three, others take five, and that's an estimate, not a fixed rule. You'll usually take about four or five courses each semester, with two main semesters a year. A typical week is a mix of lectures, smaller discussion sections or seminars, and labs, plus a large amount of independent work — reading, problem sets, essays and projects — because your grade (your GPA) is built continuously from work across the whole term, not from one final exam. Keeping a full course load matters beyond academics: F-1 status requires it, so never drop below full-time without first talking to your DSO (see Guide 04). Your first year often includes broad "general education" courses across different subjects before you specialise, which is by design — the system is built to let you explore.
Yes, within limits — but this is immigration territory that changes and depends on your field and situation, so treat the following as an overview, not advice, and confirm with your DSO or an immigration attorney. As an F-1 graduate you can apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training): about 12 months of work in your field of study. If your degree is in a designated STEM field, you may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — up to roughly 36 months of work authorisation in total. Beyond that, staying longer usually means an employer sponsoring an H-1B work visa, which is capped and awarded by lottery, so it is not guaranteed (a "cap-gap" rule can bridge your status if a petition is filed in time). There are strict limits on unemployment during these periods (currently 90 days on OPT, 150 cumulative on STEM OPT). The short version: there is a real, legal path to working after graduation, especially in STEM, but nothing about it is automatic — plan for it early and get qualified guidance.
Yes — transferring into a U.S. university from a Ukrainian or other foreign university is possible and common, but your credits do not move automatically. The new school evaluates your previous coursework to decide what counts toward its degree, usually by requiring a course-by-course credential evaluation from a recognised service (WES, ECE, or another NACES-member) together with your transcripts, and often the course descriptions or syllabi in English. As a rule of thumb, only courses in which you earned roughly a C- equivalent or better transfer, and how much actually counts varies a great deal from school to school — some accept most of your work, others little. Because of that variation, plan early: check each target school's transfer-credit policy before you enrol anywhere, so you know what will carry over and don't repeat years unnecessarily. The community-college "2+2" route in Guide 02 is essentially a transfer planned from day one.
